Travel scholarship supports MBA mum
Feb, 2008
Even more students were given the opportunity to take the popular Industry Studies in Asia (ISA) subject this year thanks to travel scholarships supported by the Annual Fund.
A range of scholarships were offered to help students with financial or family commitments cover the costs of the 10-day field trip to Shanghai in January.
With two small children and no family in Australia to help care for them, full-time MBA student Zillay Batool assumed she’d have to miss out on ISA. But a scholarship meant she could afford the airfare and other travel expenses, plus make arrangements for childcare while she was away.
"If it wasn’t for the scholarship I wouldn’t have been able to do the subject and would have missed out on learning so much,” says Zillay. “The whole experience gave me a greater understanding of cultural differences and an in-depth insight into the Chinese market."
During the field trip students undertake team-based projects for companies with operations in China. This year there were 14 projects for companies such as ANZ, NAB, BHP, Aromababy and Tourism Victoria.
"ISA is unique because it gives students a true international experience and they can apply all their MBA skills to a real-life industry project,” said Associate Professor Mark Crosby.
"Having the Annual Fund support the travel scholarships meant that all students, regardless of their circumstances, could gain hands-on experience in this important and influential market.
"Thank you to alumni for helping to make this happen."
